  • shoepixie: Mostly just...more simple. Fewer boards. That's all. :) I do think a new suggestions topic is needed, though, in light of things I've been hearing recently.

  • medusa: Altering it to what?  Maybe this constitutes a topic?  It seems somehow wrong to discuss the future of the board in the shoutbox, lol!

  • shoepixie: Hey, kids! I'm thinking about rather drastically simplifying the board structure. Thoughts?

Welcome to Clockwork Lullabye!!!

Clockabye has been around, in one form or another, for almost four years. It has amassed an incredible amount of really fantastic writers and creative minds, and given birth to a very close-knit community of writers, artists and roleplayers. We anticipate and look forward to drawing even more friends into the bunch.

Clockwork Lullabye started as a Collaborative Fiction board focusing on quality, community, and strong storytelling. It's inspired art, flash fiction, short stories, and (coming soon) a comic. In the days ahead, Clockabye will be opening up to host all the creativity that it might inspire. Due to this, we're on a temporary hold as far as new staff-generated plots. Please see the Rules and Resources area to find out how to join in.

Technology!
« on: May 21, 2008, 01:10:46 PM »
OK!  It's your adorable mod here and I'm supposed to tell you a little more about how technology works in Fractured London!

You can probly find out everything you want at the wiki!  http://thefractured.wikispaces.com/

Vodas
You can find Z's awesome write up on them here.
Basically a voda is your main communication device.  But it also acts like a credit card when you don't wanna use physical money.  You can send messages to your friends and if you get a camera mod you can take and send pics too.  It also has a organizer in it and address book and everything.   It's basically all you need!

Aether
The aether is basically the Fractured version of the internet.  But instead of lots of sites it's more like one site that everybody has a page on.  Everybody has something called a 'aetherome', aero for short that they can put all their information on.  It basically stores all the info that's on your voda but you can hide or show it whatever you want.   And you can make diary posts or share music or pics or whatever you want!  There is a good trade in people who design awesome looking aero pages.  Putting someone's calling card into the slot in your voda gives you their aero address as well as the option of adding them to your contact list for sending messages.

Modifications
This is when you modify your body to do something.  There are basically two kinds of modifications you can get - mechanical and anavitalic. (that means a combination of the sciences of anbaromagnetism and vitalism)  Or nanite but that usually goes under anavitalic.  Mechanical mods to the body are usually something like pneumatic tubes or something like that or a clockwork arm or leg.  It's most often used to replace a body part especially in the parts of town where people don't really trust anavitalic modifications.  The other kind is basically what we think of as computer tech which in this world can only happen when it's implanted in the body.  It can take any form from a replacement limb to a computer readout in front of the eyes.  Anything really!
The differences between the two are that mechanical mods are much more tried and true and less likely to go wrong.  They've been happening since the Victorian age!  Anavitalic mods are much more varied and advanced but on the other hand you're kinda being a lab rat for a very new science.  They also are a lot harder on the body and have a better chance of not working well with your original flesh.

Transportation
Cars have been outlawed for a while now except for the government of course.  Yeah some people have managed to put together cards and figured out how to get them to run on...something or other.  But if they get caught they're in trouble!  Mostly people take the tube.   There is the underground as well as the skyrail in most sections of the city.  It's currently the only way to get from one Barony to another and there are checkpoints as various stations much like customs between countries.   There are still roads of course in some parts of the city but some have been taken over with houses built on them and others have simply not been maintained.  Most people either ride a bicycle or a motorbike or moped which are currently the only legal motor vehicles at this time for regular citizens.

Engines
Analytical Engines are basically what's taken the place of computers (which don't exist in this world).  They first came into use int eh 1850s and were very useful by the late Victorian age and now are a part of society.  Depending on the size of the engine and what model it's built on they can do everything from very simple things to very advanced functions.  Some are tiny and delicate and only as big as a bed or a wardrobe but others are as big as a house!  Any serious computing work is done on an engine.

Conversion
There are starting to be one or two ways for engines and vodas to communicate but it's not really reliable and right now the two branches of technology don't really touch.

Entertainment
(This is actually still being written and figured out!  It's pretty fluid as we're working it out as we go.)
Radio has been around since the early 1900s and although some people predict it's a dying technology it's still going strong in the City as a way to get the word out to people.  There are more pirate radio station that commercial ones but most of the baronies and sections of CityGov have their own radio broadcasts.  There are still radio plays and live-action radio entertainment  though it's been replaced again by live theater for the most part.    Most people in the city have radio reception in their bodies as a paste on receiver that you can glue to your teeth is something you can pick up at the chemists.  If not it's easy to mod your voda to pick them up as well
There is a happy underground trade of homemade vids that people take with their voda cameras or picture shows that they put music to.  Aeros that host lots of funny vids tend to get a lot of visitors and there are people who have people they don't even know visiting them. Sharing vids or things that were happening on the street were also a way that the ordinary people fought back against police corruption a few decades ago and that led to Barony governments having a lot more autonomy and power!
